Men's Tennis - Fri, May 5, 2017

By all accounts, those who have witnessed Williamsons tennis team since its inception in 2010, all agree that the 2017 team is the best team in school history.  The team went out backed that up on Friday as they advanced a school record four players into the semi-final round of the 2017 NJCAA Region XIX Men's Tennis Tournament on Friday in West Windsor, New Jersey.

Junior Ryan Haines (JR/Aston, PA) to the semi-final round in both Singles and Doubles.  In advancing to the semi-finals in Singles, Haines became the first tennis player in school history to advance to the semi-final round in Singles twice.  He made it to the semi-final round at 4th Singes in 2016 and advanced to the semi-final round again today at 5th Singles with an impressive 6-2, 7-5 win over Troy Louango of Ocean County College.

Equally impressive in advancing to Saturday's semi-final round was Joe Marchozzi (JR/Conshohocken, PA) at Third Singles.  He avenged an earlier season loss to An Patel of Bucks County Community College with a straight set win, 6-4, 7-5.

The most exciting match of the day for Williamson involved that of Fourth Singes Player David Derby (FR/Pitman, NJ).  After losing to Donovan Roberts of Ocean County College in straight sets a week ago, he took on Roberts again on Friday in a rematch.  Derby lost the first set in a tiebreaker but battled back to win a an exciting come-from-behind 6-7, (3), 6-4, 6-3 win to advance to the semi-final round.

The Third Doubles team of Haines and Isaac Eshenour (FR/Shippensburg, PA) received a walk-over victory to also advance to Saturday's action.

A win by any of the four Williamson players on Saturday would advance them to the 2017 NJCAA National championships in Plano, Texas on May 21.
