Defense Clamps Down in Win over St. Joes
Williamson scored less than a minute into their game against St. Joseph's University and then added their second goal less than four minutes later. While no one knew it at the time, that was all they would need as the Mechanic defense would play a stellar game, holding the Hawks to just a single goal in a 9-1 Williamson triumph Saturday afternoon.
Chase Staley got Williamson on the board at the 14:01 mark to set the tone early on, as Williamson would race to a 5-0 first quarter lead. Anthony Zollo scored at the 10:14 mark off a feed from Hayden McGinnis, followed by Seamus Bohannon at the 7:03 mark, with an assist going to Cooper Conroy. Rob Wagner made it 4-0 at the 4:00 mark before Staley would add his second goal of the quarter with just 14 seconds left to make it 5-0.
Both teams settled down a bit in the second quarter, as Anthony Zollo added his second goal at the 9:28 mark. That would be the only goal of the quarter for either team.
Williamson added two more goals within the first five minutes of the third quarter, as Staley added his third goal and Cooper Conroy picked up his first to make it 8-0. St Joe's finally got on the board at the 9:59 mark to pull to within 8-1.
The score would remain that way until literally the last second of the game when Chase Staley scored his fourth goal of the game to close things out with a 9-1 win for the Mechanics.
Williamson's defense was outstanding the entire game and they constantly thwarted any offensive effort by the Hawks. Goalies Jack Welsh and CJ McCue combined for 9 saves on the day.
The win moves Williamson's winning streak to four, as they stand at 4-1 on the year. They next host CBC-Essex next Friday night, March 21 at 7:00 P.M.
