Wrestling Splits Season Opening Dual Meet
DEPTFORD TOWNSHIP, N.J. - The Williamson College of the Trades wrestling team opened the season on Saturday with a split of a dual meet, downing the Rutegrs Wrestling Club 56-3, but falling to Rowan College of South Jersey, 44-22.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ROWAN SOUTH JERSEY
- The Mechanics started the match well as, beginning at 174 lbs, NWCA All-American Alexander Gamble-Williams opened with an 11-2 major decision.
- Next up was fellow All-American Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts, who opened a 12-0 lead on his opponent, before earning at pin just past the midway point of the third round.
- Also picking up a pin for WT was Jaden Thompson. Scoring for Williamson was Ali Cheeks who had a fall in his match against Rowan.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST RUTGERS WRESTLING CLUB
- Facing an undermanned Rutgers team in a match where the Mechanics won five of the bouts by forfeit, Williamson dominated the competition, winning five of the other six matches.
- At 147 lbs, Jude Van Auken earned a 18-7 major decision in his collegiate wrestling debut.
- Cheeks again gained a fall when he defeated his opponent at 165 lbs.
- Gamble-Williams took a major decision by a 15-4 score at 174.
- Ahmad-Statts claimed a tech fall at 184, by a score of 17-1.
- Thompson finished off the day with his second pin of the afternoon at 235.
