Nurrideen Falls in National Championship Final
Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts magical run towards a National Collegiate Wrestling Association national title came to an end Saturday afternoon, as he lost in the 174 lb. championship bout to #1 seeded Ledger Petracek of Menlo University by a score of 8-1. Petracek used a first period take-down and three back points to build a 6-0 first period lead. He would later add a point via escape and take on a point for riding time to gain the national championship.
The loss cannot take away the tremendous accomplishment the Nurrideen achieved in making it to the national final. A freshman who was Injured for almost the entire first semester, he garnered only 11 matches prior to the national tournament. He was 9-2 heading into the action in Shreveport, but that is where things really took off.
Seeded 15th in the 174 lb. weight class, he won his opening round match via fall and then proceeded to knock off the #18 seed, followed by the #2 seed and then the #7 seed before knocking off the #3 seed in last night's national semifinal.
In the final, he gave it his all but Petracek proved to be too much, showing why he was indeed the #1 seed.
Despite the loss, Nurrideen becomes just the fourth Williamson wrestler to ever make it to a national final. Just a freshman, he is sure to be a force the next two years as well.
As a team, despite just five wrestlers, Williamson finished an astounding 25th overall out of 85 teams, and trailed on MEC champion Slippery Rock Univresity as far as placing of MEC conference teams at Nationals.
Congratulations once again go out to Williamson's other 2025 national qualifier wrestlers - Liam Kernan, Michael Kling, Vince Piermatteo and Harry Asencio, for the work they did. And once again a huge congratulations as well to head coach Ron Frank and assistants Joe Silvestri and Paul Louth for their dedication to wrestlers and all of Williamson!
They say that all good things must come to an end however tonight's loss is just the beginning of what Nurrideen has to look forward to moving forward!
Congratulations wrestlers and coaches for a job more than well done!
